Ulster face the prospect of a semi-final clash against Edinburgh without World Cup winning prop John Afoa. Afoa was cited this afternoon for an alleged dangerous tackle on Munster’s Felix Jones which occurred early in the second half of Sunday’s Heineken Cup quarter-final in Thomond Park. The incident went unpunished by referee Romain Poite at the time.

After reviewing the incident, citing commissioner Peter Larter of England filed a complaint against the former Auckland Blues man for dangerous play.

The New Zealander will learn his fate when he appears at a disciplinary hearing in Dublin on Thursday.

Law 10.4 (j) of the IRB rules prohibits “lifting a player from the ground and either dropping or driving that player’s head and/or upper body into the ground whilst the player’s feet are off the ground.”

If found guilty, Afoa faces sanctions which begin at three weeks for a “low end” offence, rising to six weeks for a mid-range punishment and 10+ weeks at the higher end.

Meanwhile, it has been that Munster will be without Number 8 James Coughlan, who sustained a broken bone in his hand in the same game, will be missing for this weekend’s Rabo Pro-12 clash with Glasgow.

The backrow will have to undergo further tests to establish how long he’s likely to be sidelined for. The province are still awaiting news of centre Keith Earls who is carrying a leg injury.
